Joining the Pakistan Army is the dream of thousands of young Pakistanis every year, but most students only know about one route — the PMA Long Course. In reality, the Army offers several different entry routes depending on your education, age and gender. This guide explains every major route after Matric and Intermediate, the general eligibility for each, and how the selection process works, so you can choose the route that fits you.
Route 1 — PMA Long Course (Commissioned Officer)
The PMA Long Course is the main route to become a commissioned officer. Male candidates with Intermediate or a Bachelor’s degree can apply (generally age 17 to 23 years, unmarried). Selected cadets train for two years at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Kakul, and pass out as Second Lieutenants. Registration opens twice a year on the official portal — always check the currently open course and its last date on the portal itself before applying.
Route 2 — Soldier (Sipahi)
Candidates with Matric or Middle education can join as soldiers. The general age range is about 17½ to 23 years with a minimum height of 5 feet 6 inches for most trades. Along with general-duty soldiers, there are trades such as Clerk (Intermediate with computer skills), Cook and Sanitary Worker, each with its own education requirement given in the recruitment advertisement.
Route 3 — AFNS (Armed Forces Nursing Service) for Females
Female candidates with FSc (Pre-Medical) can join the Armed Forces Nursing Service and become commissioned nursing officers after training. Matric with Science is required along with FSc Pre-Medical; the exact marks percentage and age limits are given in each AFNS advertisement.
Route 4 — Lady Cadet Course (LCC) for Females
The Lady Cadet Course is for female graduates and postgraduates in specific subjects (announced course by course, such as education, psychology, IT and others). Selected lady cadets train at PMA Kakul and are commissioned as Captains in their respective corps.
Route 5 — Technical Cadet Course and Medical Cadets
Students with FSc (Pre-Engineering) can join the Technical Cadet Course for engineering corps such as Signals and EME. Students who want to become Army doctors can join as Medical Cadets through Army-administered medical colleges. Both routes are announced separately with their own eligibility and dates.
The Selection Process — Step by Step
- Online registration at the official portal joinpakarmy.gov.pk or at your nearest Army Selection & Recruitment Centre (AS&RC).
- Initial tests at the AS&RC — intelligence (verbal and non-verbal) and academic tests based on your education level.
- Physical tests — running, push-ups, sit-ups and chin-ups to the standards given for your course.
- Initial medical examination.
- For officer entries: ISSB tests (psychological tests, group tasks and interviews over several days), followed by a detailed medical and final selection by GHQ.
- Final merit list and call letters for training.
Documents You Will Need
- Original certificates and marks sheets (Matric, Intermediate, degree) with photocopies
- CNIC (and B-Form if under 18 at registration)
- Domicile certificate
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Father’s CNIC copy
Important Warnings
- Registration on the official portal is completely free. Never pay any agent who promises selection.
- Dates, age limits and education requirements change slightly with every course. The official advertisement and the portal are the only truth — check them before you apply.
- Start preparing early: the intelligence and academic tests are competitive, and physical fitness cannot be built in one week.
